Barometers

Barometers An instrument used to measure atmospheric pressure. Around the mid 17th century experiments by Galileo and Torricelli discovered that a tube of mercury with one end plugged and turned upside down, the open end in a container of more mercury, remained full to around 29” in height and that varying barometric pressure would raise or lower this column of mercury. From these experiments Barometers were developed.
