A fine & impressive 10” wheel barometer by Lione Somalvico & Co, 125 Holborne Hill, London. Quality concave cast bezel & glass, hygrometer & spirit thermometer. Choice mahogany veneers with boxwood & tulipwood banding. Somalvico, maker of high quality barometer were at this address 1805-07. There are number of examples in Banfields ‘Wheel Barometers’.

An attractive mahogany wheel barometer. The dial signed P.Comolli & Co, Dudley. The case inlayed with flower head roundels, conche shells & edged with line stringing and a ‘broken arch’ pediment with brass urn finial. Peter Comolli & Co was recorded as working in Dudley from 1817 to 1830, and possibly to about 1850.

A fine Cuban mahogany stick barometer by Benjamin Martin of London. Finely engraved dial and brass surround to the glazed door, C.1775. Benjamin Martin was born 1704 and died 1782. He was an enterprising & talented instrument maker and examples of his work are much sought after by collectors.

A regency inlayed wheel barometer by Francis Molton, St.Lawrence Steps, Norwich. The 8” silvered & signed dial with decorated centre. Alcohol thermometer flanked by conche shell paterae, with rosette decoration to the rounded pediment and base. Recorded working 1822-30.

NAIRNE & BLUNT MAHOGANY STICK BAROMETER

A good, early mahogany stick barometer by Nairne and Blunt of London, C.1780. Nairne and Blunt were eminent makers of good quality barometers and were working together from 1774-1793. Nairne was born 1726 & died 1806. Blunt was apprenticed from 1760 and they became partners in 1774. This barometer came on the market at the sale of the contents of Rogate House near Petersfield in 1981.

A good mahogany wheel barometer by G.Broggi. The case has line stringing to the edges & is inlaid with floral roundels & Conch shells. The dials (8” main dial) are finely engraved & silvered & the concave brass bezel is well turned. Gillando Broggi is recorded by Banfield at Moulsham, Chelmsford from C.1815-45, and most active 1826-30.

A very fine & early mahogany stick barometer by John Bird, London. It is of typical Bird design & there is evidence under the cistern cover that it would have had an open cistern originally, later fitted with a safer bulb tube. John Bird was a very noted maker, 1709-76. See Goodison, P.135, Banfields Barometer Makers P.26&27, Banfields Barometers Stick & Tube P.51-53 & a similar design by Ramsden on P.54

A good Rosewood 4 glass wheel barometer signed ‘C.Gerletti, Glasgow’. The silvered registers within a satinwood cross-banded case, surmounted by a swan-neck pediment & urn finial. Charles Gerletti is recorded at several addresses in Glasgow from 1828-1848.

An unusual & most attractive Georgian stick barometer. The beautifully engraved silvered register signed Thomas Johnson behind the qlazed door. The mahogany case with choice flame veneer, unusual top moulding & oval cistern cover (the shape of which suggests it is of Scottish make).

A good “5 Glass” Wheel Barometer by “D.Fagioli, London”. Silvered scales spirit thermometer and signed level. The rosewood case with swan neck pediment. (Domonic Fagioli is recorded in Banfield as working in London 1834-1840 and then with his son 1840-1854 and describes them as prolific makers).

A good mahogany stick Barometer by John Hunt, Overton. The rare case style, featuring the hygrometer above the shaped dial and its matching door. The signed dial is well engraved and has a mercury thermometer. Chequered stringing links the top to the door and then runs down the trunk which has choice veneer. Well turned and decorated cistern cover. Unusual and local!

A good mahogany stick barometer with architectural pediment and brass finial. The finely engraved silvered dial signed ‘Antony Gatty & Co, Reading’, with spirit thermometer. The moulded trunk has herringbone veneer edged with double chequered stringing. The turned cistern cover has ivory & ebony inlays. A particularly attractive example.

A fine and rare satinwood wheel barometer by Anone, 26 High Holborn, London with a 10” dial, spirit thermometer & hydrometer. In the barometer book ‘Barometer Makers & Retailers’ 1660-1900, Edwin Banfield records that Francis Anone was working at 26 High Holborn from 1802 to 1828. He describes him as an Italian immigrant who made and sold high quality barometers, thermometers, telescopes & prints.

A good and early wheel barometer with long spirit thermometer and 8” silvered dial signed “Gatty Reading”. The case is edged with line stringing and has shell and rosette inlays. The grain of the edge veneer runs front to back an early sign/feature. Arch pediment with brass finial and nice concave cast brass bezel and through the glass reference hand.
