Lacquer Cased Bracket Clocks

Lacquer Cased Bracket Clocks Lacquering, Japanning or Chinoiserie is the name given to clock cases with often a Chinese style decoration applied to them. Figures and shapes are built up with Gesso, then a series of glazes over an opaque ground colour are applied. Various pigments were used for this groundwork most commonly red, green, black and cream although others were used. Then gilding and painting were used enhance the plain background. This technique was popular on bracket clocks in the latter stages of the 17th century up until the middle of the 18th centuries.
