Mahogany Longcase Clocks

Mahogany was extensively used in the construction of longcase clock cases after about 1750. It was used in its solid form or more importantly as finely cut veneers. The use of veneers by the case maker allowed beautiful ‘flame’ patterns to be produced, the best of which was reserved for the trunk door. As we progressed into the 19th century, most 8 day longcase clock cases would have been made using Mahogany.
