Longcase Clocks
The longcase clock or ‘grandfather’ clock was made from about 1660 to around 1850. It is believed it was a natural progression from the lantern clock (a weight driven wall clock). The idea of enclosing both the weights (and the pendulum) in a protective case seemed a logical idea, and so the longcase clock was born. The clock case then became an important piece of work for the cabinetmakers to show off their skills, as important as the clock itself.
