Painted Dial Longcase Clocks

The painted or ‘white’ dial became available in longcase clocks from about 1775. Most dials were produced in Birmingham by specialist dial makers such as Osborne & Wilson, Walker, Finnemore etc. The arrival of the painted dial virtually killed off the use of the (by then) ‘old fashioned’ brass dial. The art work on the early painted clock dials tended to be of the highest quality, whist the later dials tended to be cruder, but charming none the less.
